Working in the Special Collections Reading Room

Our reading room has an extensive reference collection with works and literature on the study of manuscripts, historic ancillary disciplines, book and library history, Franconian history and culture.

Here you can use our collections that require particular protection. The study desks are reserved for this purpose only. There are a few things you need to know when working in the reading room:

Before you visit

You must have a scholarly reason for viewing our special collections. Despite your academic interests, the use of certain parts of the collection (such as manuscripts, early printed books, graphics and personal papers) may be restricted or prohibited for conservation, legal or other reasons. We therefore recommend that you get in touch before you visit.

To use the valuable collections, you will need to complete a written application (PDF, 363KB) and present your ID or passport.

Coats and bags (including laptop bags) must be left in the cloakroom on the ground floor. Drinks (including water) are not permitted in our reading room.

Working in the reading room

Please enter your details in the visitors’ book by the entrance every time you visit. You are generally only permitted to have one item at your desk at any time. If you wish to take notes, you will need to use a pencil. You may not take photos or scan items yourself – we will do it for you.

The reading room is monitored by video.
