Preserving Knowledge
Since its founding in 1619, the University Library of Würzburg has served as a center for the preservation and care of written cultural heritage. With the secularisation of 1803 and the dissolution of clerical dominions in Germany, the library became the heir to the newly nationalised monastic and collegiate libraries. It has since housed the literary heritage of Lower Franconia, including the former Würzburg Cathedral Library, a collection of truly European significance with manuscripts dating back to the 5th century and the largest assemblage of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts on the European mainland.
In addition, the University Library of Würzburg holds the most comprehensive collection of literature on Franconia, its culture, and its history to be found in any academic library.
Cultural assets of such significance (such as the Giant Bible of Mainz or the Papyrus Collection of the University Library) must be protected as effectively as possible through comprehensive emergency preparedness. In the event of an incident, the University Library of Würzburg is equipped to respond swiftly, thanks to the KEK model project “SOS Emergency”, which ensures rapid aid for unique holdings. Among the key resources are three mobile, well-equipped emergency container units stationed near each storage area, ready for immediate deployment in the event of a disaster.
