Research Data Services

Publish research data

Digital research data is all data that is generated during a research process or is the result of such a process. Each subject area can generate its own data. Examples include data from experiments, simulations, source research, interviews, etc. The term research data management (RDM) refers to the planned, systematic handling of this data.

The Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg supports sustainable and structured data management and the accessibility of research data. It therefore adopted guidelines for handling research data on 20 March 2017. Research data management is also part of the guidelines introduced in 2022 to safeguard good scientific practice and deal with scientific misconduct.

Since 2021, research data management at JMU has been jointly organised, promoted and further developed by the University Library and the Computing Centre. An overview of the joint offers and services can be found here and on Research Data Management Bavaria.

Consultancy and specialist coordination

Publication services of the UBW for research data

The publication of research data serves, among other things, to improve the verifiability of published research results and the subsequent utilisation of the data. For these reasons, the publication of research data is increasingly demanded by third-party funding organisations.

The Würzburg University Library currently offers JMU researchers two institutional publication channels for research data: WueData and the JMU Data Journals.

Both services are briefly presented below. In addition to the most important information on the scope and functionality of the respective services, the corresponding contact details for queries are also provided.

Wue Data - The institutional research data repository of the JMU

WueData is JMU's institutional research data repository, in which university members can publish their digital research data in accordance with the FAIR principles (see also the WueData guidelines).

It is based on the RADAR system from FIZ Karlsruhe. The data is stored exclusively on the IT infrastructure of JMU Würzburg. The University Library is responsible for data curation and publication (including DOI allocation) as well as advising and supporting data providers.

In principle, every chair at JMU Würzburg has access to a free workspace with a storage volume of up to 2 TB for the publication of research data in WueData. For larger data volumes, data providers may have to purchase additional storage via the data centre's web shop. The retention period for published data is at least 10 years.

The workspaces are set up by the data curators of the University Library after consultation. It is possible to create individual or group workspaces. Login is then possible using Shibboleth (JMU ID and password).

More detailed information on use can be found in the terms of use and FAQ.

The first steps are documented in a quick guide, the FAQ and various checklists, which are sent to users on request.

JMU Data Journals - JMU's institutional data journal service

JMU DataJournals offers a platform for the publication of digital journals that serve the publication of research data or explanatory and accompanying materials.

Articles in data journals are particularly useful for the description of large and/or complex data sets, as they facilitate the subsequent utilisation of this research data. Similar to conventional journals, they undergo a scientific peer review process before publication to ensure the high quality of the respective article.

JMU DataJournals is operated by the University Library and forms part of the infrastructure in the area of research support services. It is technically based on Open Journal Systems (OJS), an open source software developed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) organisation. In addition to hosting and DOI allocation, the library also provides advice and training for editors so that they can manage their data journal themselves from now on.

In principle, every researcher at JMU is free to publish a data journal in open access via JMU DataJournals, provided this is supported by a professor. For each data journal, a contract is concluded between the publishers and the University Library (e.g. on cost allocation and reusability of the content). In consultation with the publishers, the University Library creates an area for each journal. This includes the editorial back-end as well as the front-end, which can be customised within a given framework.

Further information on the services offered can be found here.

Events, training courses and events on the subject of FDM

The increased importance of research data is also reflected in the continuous expansion of the University Library's event and course programmes on this topic.

The focus is not only on academics as a target group. Students are also addressed in order to sensitise them to the topic of (research) data management as part of good scientific practice at an early stage.

Love Data Week - international action week on the topic of RDM

The JMU RDM team has been taking part in the international action week on research data management since 2024. In the virtual coffee lectures organised by the UBW, insights into new offers and current facets as well as practical assistance on the topic of RDM are offered.

You can find an overview of the LDW 2026 programme here.

Courses for students

In 2025, the UBW has also prepared the topic of research data management for students. Since the winter semester 2025/26, a new module on information and digital competence has been offered, including a course unit dedicated to digital data management. This module can also be taken as an e-learning course from summer semester 2026 and added to the curriculum via the ASQ pool.

Information on course registration can be found here.

Information materials for academics and researchers

In addition to individual counselling services for all questions relating to RDM at JMU, the RDM team at the UBW is working on the continuous expansion of RDM information materials.

The UBW is currently designing an electronic RDM portfolio that will provide researchers with a systematic introduction to research data management and the institutional offerings at JMU. This will be available electronically from winter semester 2026/27 in the form of a Mahara service.

If you have any questions about RDM or need specific advice, please contact us.
