Newbie?

Welcome to the University Library of Würzburg. The library is open to all interested parties.

The University Library of Würzburg is made up of the Main Library and 15 departmental libraries. In addition, there are around 60 smaller institute, chair and hospital libraries that manage themselves independently.

Please note the opening hours of the Main Library. You can find the opening hours of our departmental libraries on the respective websites.

Library card
To borrow our items you need a library card. Are you studying at the University of Würzburg? Then your student ID also serves as your library card.

User account
The library card is always linked to a personal user account. Your current loans, orders and hold items are listed there. Check your Library Account for due dates and to renew on-loan items.

The catalogue
The library's catalogue is your first stop to locate books and other items of our collections. The catalogue is freely accessible online.

The results of your search query are displayed in two separate lists: "Catalogues" and "Articles & more". The list "Catalogues" shows the items of our collections. Under "Articles & more" you will find scientific articles of journals.

Loan status
The printed items are located in the reading rooms of the Main Library and the departmental libraries, as well as in other stacks, closed to the public.

You can borrow  most of the items. Please note the current loan status in the catalogue.

o    You can fetch available items from the shelves in the reading rooms by yourself and book them to your library account via the lending stations.
o    You can reserve items that are on loan via catalogue. As soon as the item has been returned, we will put it on loan for you and inform you by e-mail.
o    Items that are not for loan can only be used in the reading rooms; materials requiring special protection can only be used in the Special Collections reading room.
o    You can order items from our stacks via catalogue. As soon as the book is ready for you, we will notify you by e-mail.
o    Items of our departmental libraries (Teilbibliotheksbestand) are usually not available for loan. You can find further information about the respective lending options and opening hours via the “Location guide”.

Each item has a unique shelfmark that helps you to find the book in the reading rooms. Under "Location guide" the general plans of the Main Library and departmental libraries are linked.

Loan period and renewal
Usually you can borrow books for 30 opening days.

You can renew your books twice, each time for 4 weeks, within five days before they are due back. If another borrower has placed a request for a book, loans cannot be renewed.

Returning items
Please remember to return your items in time. You can check the loan period of your items in your user account. Did you add an e-mail address to your account? If one of your books is due back you will then receive an e-mail.

Information about the return option

If the loan period has expired, the book cannot be renewed. Please return the item immediately. If you have already received a chargeable letter of overdue material, you will have to pay late charges.

Many e-books and e-journals can only be accessed from the network of the Würzburg University. If you are studying or working at the university, you have a JMU account and can use it to connect to the university network from home.

If you do not have a JMU account, you can use a computer workstation in the Main Library to access the licensed electronic media. Please bring a USB flash drive to save the PDF files.

In the catalogue, the electronic items are marked with a full text button. The accessibility is indicated by different colours.

The specific terms  of use for e-books depend on the provider. You can find articles from electronic journals in the list "Articles & more". Does the button not lead to the full text? In this case, it is worth searching for the journal title and checking the "Catalogues" list to see whether we have the journal in print or as electronic version in our stock.

Our holdings contain unique and valuable special collections (manuscripts, incunabula and early printed books, graphics). As a regional library, we also collect literature from and about Lower Franconia.

You can view the items requiring particular protection in the Special Collections Reading Room.

With us you can not only borrow media, but also use various workstations for learning.

Would you like to learn more about the UB or need help with literature research and management? Then why not attend one of our courses. In the calendar of events you will find an overview of all current events.

As a place of learning, we also offer many other services to support you in your work.

Do you have further questions? Then contact us (on site, phone, WhatsApp, e-mail, zoom consultation).

Or visit one of our events of the section "The University Library at a glance".

You can find all central information in our "Newbie"-flyer (PDF, 1,34 MB).
