Open Science @ UBW

From 26 to 29 October 2026, the University Library of Würzburg will be hosting four online coffee lectures on key topics relating to open science and open-access publications. The focus will be on the practical implementation of open science, the legal framework, and publication and funding opportunities.

This new series of events offers researchers at JMU practical insights into various aspects of Open Science and introduces the relevant services and support offered by the University Library. The aim is to provide researchers with guidance and practical assistance in implementing Open Science practices in their academic work.

In terms of content, the series of events covers a wide range of topics, from the fundamentals of open science and its significance for individual research practice, through legal issues relating to the publication of academic work, to various publication routes and funding opportunities. It will also highlight the services offered by the University Library to support researchers in implementing open science. The series concludes with an Open Science Talk featuring JMU researcher Dr Celina Müller, who, together with her co-authors, was awarded the Open Science Award 2026. She will provide insights into her research at the Chair of Psychology I and demonstrate how Open Science practices can be integrated into academic work in concrete terms.

Online Coffee Lectures

The Open Science Lectures will take place from 26 to 29 October 2026, from 12:00 to 12:30 each day, as Zoom meetings. Following the short presentations, there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion with the Open Science team at the University Library of Würzburg.

Participation is, of course, free of charge and no registration is required.

Take part in the Open Science Lectures

Open Science – Does this affect me?

What significance does Open Science have for your own academic work, and what opportunities does open research offer? This talk provides an overview of the key areas of Open Science and highlights the services offered by the University Library of Würzburg to support JMU researchers in implementing it.

Open Science – What am I actually allowed to do?

What rights do researchers retain after publishing their academic work? Under what conditions may publications be made available on repositories, and what role do Creative Commons licences play? The Coffee Lecture covers the key legal principles relating to Open Science and Open Access, from copyright and publishing contracts to secondary publication (self-archiving).

Open Science – How do I fund publications?

How can academic publications be funded, and what options are available to researchers at JMU? This talk provides a concise overview of various publication and funding channels, ranging from the university’s publication fund and institutional repositories to the European publication platform Open Research Europe.

Open Science – How do I go about it?

To round off the Open Science Lectures, Dr Celina Müller from the Chair of Psychology I at JMU will share insights into her research practice in an Open Science Talk. Together with her co-authors, she was presented with the Open Science Award at the German Psychotherapy Congress (DPK) 2026 for her transparent and reproducible research. In her talk, she will explain how she implemented open science practices as part of her award-winning research.

You can read the award-winning research article by Dr Müller and her co-authors here: “(No) attentional biases in obsessive–compulsive disorder? An eye-tracking study using idiosyncratic stimulus material.”
