Overview of publishers and journals with existing memberships, discounts and other special conditions

Some publishers grant "corresponding authors" of the University of Würzburg special conditions for Open Access publications in the context of transformation contracts, memberships or subscriptions. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the details and conditions for these special conditions. For publishers that are not listed on this page, the general terms and conditions of the Publication Fund apply.

The university board has a funding model for open access publications since 2024 in which authors contribute equally to the costs of the open access option for hybrid journals with a transformation agreement and for articles in fully open access journals. This also applies if the authors have chosen the opt-out option for articles in hybrid journals with a transformation agreement. From 2026, the author's own contribution will be reduced and calculated according to the following formula: EUR 300 minimum contribution + (total costs (= article fee + VAT) – EUR 300)/4, capped at EUR 1,500. This applies to all articles accepted for publication by the publisher from 1 January 2026.

AAAS


ACM

  • From January 1, 2026, all ACM publications will be published Open Access. The APC for journal articles and proceedings articles can be funded by the publication fund. Calculation author‘s own share.
     

ASM (American Society for Microbiology)

  • 2026: You receive a 25 % discount on the page. A personal membership of the corresponding author reduces the page charges in addition to this discount.


BMJ

  • 2026:  Transformation contract for hybrid journals
    • BMJ Journal Online Standard Collection (not: The BMJ) (List of Journals)
    • Article types: Research articles ("original articles reporting on primary research")
    • The total costs charged internally amount to EUR 4,954.20.
    • You will be charged an author's own share of EUR 1,463.55 (even if you do not use the Open Access option!).


Cambridge University Press

  • 2026: Transformation contract for hybrid journals
     
    • All hybrid journals from the Cambridge Portfolio (List of Journals)
    • Article types: Research Articles, Review Articles, Rapid Communications, Brief Reports, Case Reports
    • The internally calculated total costs amount to EUR 3,338.99.
    • You will be charged an author's own share of EUR 1,059.75 (even if you do not use the Open Access option!).
  • 2026: Fully Open Access journals
     


Company of Biologists

  • 2026: Transformation contract for hybrid journals
    • Journals “Development”, “Journals of Cell Science” und “Journal of Experimental Biology” (List of Journals)
    • The internally calculated total costs amount to EUR 5,477.52. You will be charged an author's own share of EUR 1,500.00 (even if you do not use the Open Access option!)


Copernicus

  • 2026: 10% discount for selected journals

  • You will be charged an author's own share of 934,64 EUR for Core-Hybrid and 1,500.00 EUR for Cell Press and The Lancet (even if you do not use the Open Access option!).
  • 2024-2028: Fully Open Access journals
     
    • 87 EUR Service fee for all fully Open Access journals
    • 15 % discount for Fully Gold Cell Press and Fully Gold The Lancet
    • 20 % discount for all other fully Open Access journals

IEEE

  • Reduced publication fees for articles in hybrid journals of the publisher for a limited number of publications: EUR 1,447.02
  • Reduced publication fees for articles in fully Open Access journals of the publisher for a limited number of publications: EUR 1,584.01
  • Articles in fully Open Access journals can also be funded by the Publication Fund.

MDPI

  • 2025-2026: 30 % membership discount on APC This discount cannot be combined with the Society membership discount. You can also receive funding from the Publication Fund with an author discount.
  • Funding from the Publication Fund is only possible if the journal is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) at the time the article is accepted.
  • Please indicate your affiliation with the University of Würzburg when submitting your article.

SCOAP3

  • 2019-2026: The costs for publications in SCOAP3 journals are covered by the SCOAP3 membership. For some journals, the mandatory requirement for the costs to be covered is that the article has been posted in arXiv in the main HEP (High energy physics) category before submission to the journal.
