Contactless book pick-up thanks to RFID

From July 27th, 2021 you can borrow and return your books and items by using our new self-service machines – 5 machines for borrowing (2 on the ground floor, 1 on level 1 and 2 on level 2) and 2 machines for returning (ground floor).

This significant gain in service is based on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, which is also used, for example, by the logistics industry.

Items that you have requested and which are reserved for you, as well as items on loan from other libraries will be available for you in our new take-away shelves (large reading room on level 1). There you can pick up your items by yourself and use directly the self-service machine.

In preparation for this new offer, we have tagged all our items with a RFID chip. These tags contain the item numbers which the self-service machines need for the task of issuing and receiving items.

Since the items in the Main Library are now better protected against theft than before, jackets and bags can also be taken into the reading rooms (exception: reading room special collections on level 3). Visiting the library becomes noticeably more comfortable.

Students of the University and the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt as well as the employees of the university can continue to use their previous library card.

Visitors from the city and region and lecturers without a JMU card need a new chip card in order to use the advantages of RFID.
