The University Library Shelf System

The library system of the Würzburg University Library consists of the main library and more than 70 departmental libraries.

You find the holdings of all libraries in the Catalogue and in the microfiche catalogues. Every medium has its own book number which is the key to a book’s or periodical’s location. The first part of the call number in front of the slash is called location mark = "Lokalkennzeichen") and locates the item in the library system.
Every catalogue card of the microfiche catalogue holds abbreviated information about the location of your title. Use our leaflet “Bibliotheken in Würzburg” or our homepage for full information about locations, addresses and opening hours.

The books in the main library and in most of the departmental libraries are organised in subject areas according to the Regensburger Verbundklassifikation. Each title or book is assigned a classification mark, e.g. WG 3450 relating to the subject area or topic and then arranged on the shelves in alpha-numerical order.
