Wuerzburg University Library is continuously working on a number of projects to facilitate the consultation of its stocks and to promote its special collections’ holdings with the help of up to date tools. Since 2004 the Library co-operates with the Chair of Computer Science II of Wuerzburg University (Prof. Dr. Juergen Albert) with its special focus on e-document management, efficient information retrieval, compression of text, picture and video data and easily operated user interfaces for scientific reference media.
Current enterprises especially centre on digitisation and in-depth indexing of manuscripts and other special collection items via OCR and (partly) automated annotation (e.g. with transliterations or other additional information). Another field of activities is the conversion of printed catalogues and card catalogues into XML-encoded data bases. Historical sources with reference to Franconian history are posted on a regular basis on the website Franconica Online, the affiliate online project of the Bayerische Landesbibliothek Online for the Franconian area.
