Special Collections

Two departments with specific fields of activities take care of the special collections of Wuerzburg University Library.

The Department of Manuscripts and Early Printed Books holds in trust the valuable old and special holdings of the University Library, such as papyri, manuscripts which date back to the 5th c., books of all scientific fields from the times before AD 1800 and other media meriting special protection. This department also ensures the use of materials from the University Archives.

The Department for Franconian Culture cultivates the worldwide most comprehensive and permanently enlarged collection of Franconian literature and of the literature on Franconia, its culture and history.

The stocks of both departments which as a rule are subject to specific modalities of use, are mainly made available in the Special Collections Reading Room.

The internet portal Franconica Online offers direct access to some digital resources of Franconian history. Further digital projects are in preparation.
