Borrowing books and other media in the main library

The library system of the Würzburg University consists of the main library and about 70 departmental libraries, institute libraries, libraries associated with a professorial chair and clinical libraries.

Most of the holdings of the main library are available for loan whereas holdings in the departmental libraries are non-lending collections. Please consult the departmental libraries individually to check whether they provide a short-term loan e.g. overnight or during the weekend.

To borrow items, request items from the stacks or by interlibrary loan, you will need a library card. You must be over 14 years of age and have a permanent address in Germany. The library card can be obtained at the loan desk producing either a German identity card / passport or written confirmation by the registration office that you have a permanent address in Germany. Students of Würzburg University use their student card. There are special conditions for faculty.

Items on open access which are for loan (ausleihbar) can be borrowed at all times.

Certain items of the reading rooms which are not for loan (nicht ausleihbar) can be borrowed on short-term loan basis overnight and during the weekend.

Items on request (bestellbar) or on request (reading room) (bestellbar (Lesesaal)) can be requested via the catalogue. The item will be available at the loan desk within 24 hours or in the reading room respectively.

The loan period is 30 opening days and for DVDs and videos 3 opening days. Periodicals are not for loan.

All items can be renewed in your user account (Konto) via the catalogue. If you have no possibility to use the catalogue please send us an e-mail, a postcard or a fax with the necessary information.

Items of the main library which are currently on loan can be reserved via the catalogue.

Please enter your e-mail in the catalogue and the library will inform you about due dates, reservations and delivered interlibrary loans, which can be collected at the loan desk.

Avoid overdue fees by returning the items which you have on loan in time.
